Relations to Art


Hello All, my name is Katelyn VanHoutan. I am currently a Junior at UAF majoring in Education with a minor in Linguistics. I have plans and goals to pursue my Master’s in Speech Pathology after my undergrad. I thoroughly enjoy spending time with children while assisting in their development and growth. I moved to Fairbanks a little over three years ago from Bettendorf, Iowa for school. Since then, I have been working my tail off in school and spending any free time I do have outside, exploring the beauty that is Alaska, with my Husky, Paxt.

While I personally have never really taken part in creating any art other than crafts here and there and some jewelry making when I can find the time, I have always enjoyed and had a great appreciation for art. I take a large liking to museums and learning about different art and cultures expressed through the creations. I like unique art that is not found just anywhere, one of my favorite ways to find these artists is going to First Fridays here in Fairbanks. I can always count on finding smaller local artists with beautifully unique art to support. I appreciate that UAF has this opportunity for me to explore art in a new way.

    First Fridays are wonderful. There is a hotel in Louisville that has a contemporary art museum/gallery with every changing exhibits. I have seen the coolest stuff there. Even the men's bathroom is a work to behold. I had my husband give me the all clear so I could enjoy what the bathroom had to offer.

            The Regionalist movement in the 1930s came at the peak of The Great Depression. At that time, America was in complete economic turmoil and was facing cultural and financial insecurities. Elements of Art

     I wanted to share this oil painting by Katsushika Hokusai titled “Shimotsuke Kurokamiyama Kirifuri no taki” (“Kirifuri Waterfall at Mount Kurokami in Shimotsuke Province”) that I found a couple of years ago that has stuck in my mind since. Hokusai was most famous for his “Thirty Six Views” collection featuring 36 different views of Mount Fuji in 1832, but I find a lot of his other works far more interesting. I Love Hokusai’s use of repetition to show movement in the water. The eyes are also drawn up and down the piece following the flow of the water and the use of the space vertically, adding depth and contrast. His ability to capture the calm tranquil feeling that waterfalls elicit while still depicting the violent and rapid nature of the waterfall itself is only strengthened by his choice in colors, bringing a softness to the sharp lines and details.
